Quote:2. SETTING

The region of Insular Southeast Asia aka MALAY Archipelago today consist of several island Nations, principally the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. These Nations are more or less formed as a result of several European colonizers who divided the whole Malay Archipelago around the 1600s into territories and the people of territories eventually gained their independence yet retain the names and identity given to them by their European colonizer. This topic is specifically to discuss the ppl of the Philippine islands whose Collective identity was contrived by the Spanish colonizer around 1521 when the Spaniards first tired to claim the entire philippines as a territory of Spain. And National identity concieved when the native inhabitants eventually revolted and fought to be a free people. But the Heritage of the native inhabitants of these islands is far more ancient than 1500s when the European first came to divide and conquer and our Native Austronesian heritage goes far beyond the present day boarders. |

Quote:3. The Negrito: the First People
During Last Ice Age

The Negritos are the original inhabitants of the Philippine Archipelago who first settled the region by crossing PRE-EXISTING land bridges some 40,000 plus years ago. They are so ancient that they have witnessed the change of our region's geography from what once was a connected landmass before the last ice age into islands as the water levels rose and formed the region into the beautiful islands which is how we know them today! |

Quote:4. the Malays: the Newcommers

The Philippine people today are prodominately descendants of the Malay people. We were the 2nd wave into the Philippine islands who first sailed South from Taiwan but ultimately "the land of the 100 Yuet" which was located in Southern China some 10,000+? years ago. But the malay ppl not only sailed and settled in the Philippine islands but the Whole Malay Archipelago (Philippine and Indonesian islands.) And not only that but our Malay ancestors sailed even further east and west to settle and populate the islands as far as Madagascar to the West and Easter island to the East. This Great event is known today as the Malay Disphora.... or the Austronesian Disphora (the distribution of our native culture and language around the world) over a distance of more than 2/3 the Earth's Circumfrence a feat unmatched in the history of Mankind! |

Quote:5. The Austronesian Culture & Language of the Malay

http://www.unc.edu/~nielsen/soci011/hs6/hs6026.gif
Austronesian aka "Malayo-Polynesian" is very important word which identifies not only the Malay's native culture, but also the languages we speak. No matter what island u are on, from Madagascar to Easter island, each islander speaks a language classifed under only one Language Family and that is called Austronesian. And so it is with the Culture. We all began practicing the beautiful Austronesian culture. A culture which practice the rare and honorable customs of Matriarch, Brotherhood, and Seafaring traditions. Some of our brothers retain this native culture and were able to cultivate it and yet some of our brothers on other islands blended this beautiful native culture with foreign cultures as foreign ppl sailed to certain islands and influenced and enriched the individual histories of various islands. But still the ties of Native culture and language between one islander and another should not be forgotten but celebrated as it is the very foundation of our history and the beginning and the link to one another; and possibly the key to peace because it shows that we are truly a single family having similar native languages & native culture and similar origins and that we have merely been influenced by different cultures and became unique but let us not forget our sense of Brotherhood, a concept of our beautiful Native Austronesian Culture!

Quote:6. The Foreign Adoptions of the Philippine islands PART I
Today the Philippines is a beautiful cosmopolitain of various cultures as many foreigners have sailed to our islands and left their imprint as some natives adopted various parts of these foreigner's cultures and lifestyles and yet we still managed to retain parts of their native Austronesian aspects as well.
The Main Cultural influences of foreigners who sailed to Our Philippine islands are:
Hindu
As early as 900 AD Indian traders left a very early and relatively prominent impact in the Philippine islands. Some of their influences include:
- and Indic form of writing used throughout the islands which we know today as Kavi & Baybayin - and an unorganized Religion and Martial art both centered around the Hindu Goddess: Kali. The influence of this Hindu culture covered much of the entire Philippine Archipelago.
Chinese
Early Chinese Traders are another foreign ppl who influenced the Natives of our islands, their influence can be seen prominately in the cusine of the Philippine people such as Balot an egg delicacy, Pancit a noodle dish, and Lumpia which is a type of egg roll etc.. All these foods however have been altered by adding native touch and thus became unique to our people!
Muslims
Indian Muslims also influenced the Philippine region, starting as early as the 14th century. They introduced the Culture and Islamic Religion of the Arabs. Though this too would be mixed with the native Austronesian and Indic/Chinese traditions already adopted and practiced by the natives of the Philippines. Although unlike hindu influence, Arab influence was confined prodominately in the southern islands in parts of Mindanao island and the Sulu Archipelago.

Quote:6. The Foreign Adoptions of the Philippine islands PART II
Spanish

(BATTLE OF MACTAN OF 1521; between Rajah Lapu-Lapu of Mactan island & Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer on behalf of Spain. This year is the 1st meeting between the natives and European (Spaniards) and also the 1st battle against Spanish Colonialism in the Philippines... which turned out to be a Victory for the Visayan Rajah (king) Lapu-Lapu, but sadly the spaniards would return a mere 50 years later and would sucessfully subjegate much but not all of the philippine islands)
Spanish had a far greater impact than the previously mentioned. They were very influencial as a result of 300 years of imperial rule which was unlike the other foreigners who were more or less traders. At the time, the Spaniards were rutheless colonial dictators who imposed their culture upon the natives that they could conquer and sadly even desired to replace the native's culture and religion with his own Spanish culture & religion because the Spaniard deemed all aboriginals he came across as "savages" who needed to be "civilized" etc. But nevertheless, something good came out of this, the Spaniards are accredited with being the one to more or less unify the native inhabitants of the philippines by making the struggle for independence and freedom of oppression a common goal amongst the once soviergin and independently scattered island states of the philippines. The Spaniards also gave us the name of "Philippines" which is the name we carry today. The Spaniard named our islands in honor of his King at that time King Philip II of Spain. Today the spanish presence in our history can be seen prodominately in the Religion as the majority of the Filipinos today are Roman Catholic. Another influence can be seen in our name, as many filipinos adopted spanish surnames. (though this does not mean all native filipinos are mixed with spanish, in fact those who are mixed are called "Mestizos" and are said to account for only 2% of the total philippine population while ethnic malays are said to accound for 95% of the total population. Surnames themselves were an introduction of Spaniards as we native Malays of the Philippines had no customary practice of Surnames)
American
Americans are the latest foreigners to influence the Philippine islands! They were also a colonial ruler of the Philippine islands who replaced the spanaird's 300 years of rule. The Americans ruled the Philippines for almost 50 years! Their pressence however, is as prominate as the Spaniards. The Americans taught the Native Malays of the Philippines their language of English, unlike the Spaniards, who did not attempt to widely teach the Malays their language of Spanish. And so today the Philippines is said to be the 3rd largest English speaking nation of the world! Though We still have our own native Austronesian languages! and one of those languages known as Tagalog was chosen in 1937 to be the basis of the Natiional Language of the Newly indepedent Philippine Nation and this national language was renamed Filipino. English of course is the 2nd unoffical language of the country! So today many Filipinos are trilingual speakers! They speak Filipino, English, & their regional language such as Ilokano, Cebuano, Bikolano etc! The Americans also taught us the Democratic government which is the form of government we have today in the Philippines although we Filipinos struggle to implement Democracy at its best with the many corrupt and abusive officals we have appointed. But all is not lost! |

Quote:7. Unconquered Tribes of the Philippines
As i have discussed, the Philippine islands was a place where many foreigners sailed and influenced the native's Austronesian culture. Some foreigners were belevolant traders and others were imperilst & were much more malovalent.
Even so, there were still some Natives of the Philippines who successfully fought those foreign imperilists and were able to preserve their individual cultures! The native Austronesian practioners of the Philippine islands who successfully resisted all foreign dominon and preserved the truly native culture are the Igorot tribes of Luzon and the Lumad tribes of Mindanao.
IGOROTS

LUMADS

Today they are the best expression of our truly native Austronesian way of life! And they show how cultivated and elegant our native culture already was even before any foreigner sailed into our islands as the Igorots have constructed immense towering rice terraces out of a whole mountain range that seem to reach to the heavens and the Lumads are famous for being among the finest metal workers and most colorfully dressed ppl of the Philippine islands today!
Another Unconquerable ppl are the Moros who are prodominately found in the Sulu Archipelago and also a small area of Mindanao!

They are the Muslim practioners who successfully resisted the imperialist! Today they are the best expresion of our refined pre- colonial culture that is a fusion of native austronesian, indic, and muslim cultures! They are the best example of the pre-colonial foreign adopted civilizations of the Philippine islands! They are known to be fierce and independent spirited warriors who weild mighty hindu styled weapons! |

Quote:8. And what Filipinos are Today:
And together, these Unconqured indigneous malay and muslim malay, along with the conquered christanized malay and even foreigners who decided to reside on our islands and live their lives, we are are brothers bond together under the Independent Philippine Nationality.
We just need to find a way to co-exist with each other. And i think the best way to express our Multi-cultural/religious nation is through the cultural dance, like the Philippine`s National Bayanihan Dance company, which does the dances of all the cultures of the philippines from Indigenous to Muslim to Christian.
The Word Bayanihan itself is a very appropriate word, which loosely means Community, Brotherhood, Family, Unity and working together. It is a native concept, and it is good because we were all once native people before some were converted to islam, before some were converted to christanity. we were all indigenous. and indigenous aspect of one`s culture is very important because it is our bed rock and foundation and also my people`s common bond. |
